Nestlé has confirmed that nearly 300 jobs are to be cut from its UK operations, with proposals to shift production of Blue Riband chocolate biscuits to Poland. The company has said it is now consulting with employees at its well-established British sites in York, Fawdon, Halifax and Girvan in Scotland.

Nestlé has projected a positive revenue outlook for 2017, despite challenging conditions experienced within its confectionery division. According to its latest figures for the first period of the year, overall sales were up year-on-year by 0.4%, to a total of 21 billion Swiss Francs.

Confectionery group Mondelez International has confirmed that Roberto Marques, EVP and President, North America, is set to leave the company. Tim Cofer, Chief Growth Officer, will serve as Interim President of the North American business, in addition to his current role spearheading the company's global growth strategy, while the company recruits a permanent successor.

Swiss-based chocolate manufacturer the Barry Callebaut Group has recorded year-on-year volume growth of 1.4% for the first six months of the fiscal year. Sales revenues were up 3.3% to a total of 3.5 billion CHF for the period, against a challenging market.

Lindt & Sprüngli has formed a promotional partnership with Dufry to launch the new Lindt Swiss Masterpieces Bijoux Collection. The travel retail sector product features two pralines, which include a Perle de Cuivre, which consists of crunchy cocoa and cookie chunks, enveloped in a fondant, coated with white and dark chocolate and garnished with a copper-coloured pearl.

Nutella is investing in a new £1.3 million ‘Pancakes Love Nutella’ campaign in the build-up to Shrove Tuesday, on February 28th 2017. The company’s initiative will be across social channels to on-pack messaging and fun POS displays. Sales of Nutella grew by 8.6% last Pancake Day, and representing 40% of the spread category’s growth.

Home furnishings superstore IKEA is recalling eight of its chocolate products in the UK. The first two products – recalled on June 27 – are its Choklad Mork 60% and Choklad Mork 70% bars, which are deemed a risk because the presence of milk and hazelnuts is not mentioned correctly in the ingredients list.

Angus Kennedy, Editor - Comment - 6th May It’s nothing new to report that food products are shrinking, sadly it appears that it’s nothing new to report that the chocolate industry (one company in particular) did receive the lions share of attention for this and plenty of other adverse publicity thrown in for what I would only describe as ‘for the heck of it’.

Supermarket FMCG sales reached £3.1 billion during a busy Christmas week (ending 26 December), an increase of 7.4% in value compared with 2014, according to the latest retail data from research organisation IRI. Food sales totalled £2.3 billion (+8.8%) while non-food sales reached £789 million (+3.8%).
