iSM: Walker's Nonsuch celebrate scrumptious success
Stand K20 in Hall 4.2
Upon completing the celebrations of 125 years of toffee making, family company Walker’s Nonsuch, reflect on what has been the key to success? Could it simply be hard work and determination that the company has grown from a cottage industry, to now a worldwide confectionery brand enjoyed worldwide?
Emma W comments, “After a year of celebrations shared with UK and export customers, consumer and staff, it certainly makes you reconsider our 125th birthday. To me, the key is firstly the quality of our toffee. Despite the rise and fall of raw material and packaging prices, we have always maintained the quality, even if it has meant absorbing the costs ourselves. Secondly was my late father, Ian Walker’s decision to make and focus on the Walker’s Nonsuch brand only. I believe these two reasons are why we are where we are today.”
Still at the heart of the business are the traditional 50g and 100g bars, perfect for ‘Whacking and Unwrapping’ along with gifting hammer packs, and 14 varieties of twist wrapped toffees and chocolate eclairs available in 150g 400g, 1kg and 2.5kg bulk bags for pick and mix or repacking, there’s a product for every opportunity. All made with same unique recipe that founder Edward Joseph used all those year ago. Walker’s use traditional methods, cooking the toffee slowly to maintain the richness and chew. All Walker’s Nonsuch toffees are free from artificial colours, preservatives, hydrogenated vegetable oils and gluten too.
Branding and packaging are all connected to quality feel. Attention to detail on each bag, bar or gift pack shows the heritage and tradition of this family company. Walker’s are one of the few manufactures to still use metallised wax paper for the toffees and éclairs, the wax inner to ensure the freshness and the shape of each toffee and the metallisation sparkles and entices you to buy.
New for 2019, a new Assorted Toffees and Chocolate Eclairs Toffee Tin has been launched, packed with 700g of Assorted Toffees and Chocolate Eclairs. The embossed lid design reflects the branding of the 150g bags along with a union jack which gives a quality feel, all in red, white and blue. It is a quintessentially British gift!
At ISM 2020, a new variety will be launched. Jonathan Rae, grandson to former Managing Director Ian Walker, heads up the new product development team. Despite being kept a secret until the launch at the show, Jonathan assures us, “This new product, is keeping our heritage and quality but bringing toffee right on trend. Product research so far has proved very positive.” Whilst Jonathan finalises the recipe, the design team are now working on that all-important new packaging!
